Iran's consular general in Herat Mahmoud Afkhami Rashidi said Friday that Tehran strongly supports any move which helps restart peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
The Iranian diplomat stated that his country hoped for "positive results" from the upcoming talks between the two sides, a move, he said, that can bring an end to decades of conflict in Afghanistan and sustain long term stability in the country.
At the request of the government of Afghanistan, Iran is prepared to send a representative to the peace talks in Islamabad, he said.
"We support any move which is helpful to restore peace and stability in Afghanistan, if government of Afghanistan submits any request regarding our participation at the conference and on other issues, we are prepared to offer all our support," Iranian consular general Mahmoud Afkhami Rashidi said on Friday.
He said Iran also supports the upcoming meeting between representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, US and China aimed to broker purposeful peace talks with the Taliban. He said Tehran is also willing to play a role in the talks if Tehran receives such a request from the Afghan officials.
Pakistan will host a four nation meeting of representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the US within two weeks to discuss the resumption of peace negotiation talks with the Taliban.
The Pakistani foreign ministry announced Friday that the meeting will focus on structuring a framework to reinstate the stalled talks with the group.
